Who can you become in 14 days?

I always wanted to be a movie director. The next Steven Spielberg.

So I studied at Film school and was making a living in the TV and movie industry for a while.

But then I changed my mind and realized I wanted to become a trader. So I (self)studied the markets (for a long time) and ultimately became a trader.

This is what I love about life – you can become whoever or whatever you want to be!

But one thing I never believed I could become was …

… a painter.

If I am really horrible at something, it is drawing.

Ask me to draw a person and the best I could do is a circle for the head, a vertical line for the body and lines for the rest.

Exactly like a child would.

Here’s an example to give you some idea – and don’t laugh too hard! :-)

Yes, I am THAT awful when it comes to drawing.

But wait.

One amazing thing about life is, that there is always hope!

Sometimes you can get really surprised who you can become – even in a very short time.

When I was 18 and studied film school, I had a friend who was a professional artist, so one day I asked him:

“Can you teach me how to draw a portrait even if I can’t draw at all?”

He hesitated for a while – but then said “let’s see” and accepted the challenge.

For the next 14 days, we practised 2-3 hours per day.

He started by explaining profiling. Then how to measure the angle of the nose. The distance between the eyes. He even explained ratios and other secrets an artist needs to understand to draw a good portrait.

Then we started sketching.

It didn’t go well.

I had to start over from the scratch several times and for a few days, my eraser was more active than my pen.

But on the 7th day, I started being able to identify the right proportions, ratios and nuances of the human face, and transfer them onto paper!

And that was just the beginning.

The next week my friend started teaching me about shading and contouring. How to use different pencils to make human eyes look great. And plenty of other fascinating things I knew nothing about.

And after 2 weeks – I drew my first (and only ever) portrait!

It wasn’t perfect, but it felt AMAZING.

I was blown away by the HUGE transformation in only 14 days!

Unfortunately, I don’t have that painting anymore so I can’t share it with you (it happened 25 years ago). But while the painting is gone, one thing remains:

I’m a firm believer in the power of rapid transformations.

I know they’re real and possible.

I know HUGE changes can occur, even in 14 days.

Things you had never thought would be possible.
